The Legend of Xtabay

Xkeban
It is said that in a Mayan village lived two young girls, both exceptionally beautiful. One of them, named Xkeban (which translates as the sinner), was very kind-hearted, loved animals, and often helped the poor and helpless. Xkeban was admired for these qualities, but at the same time, she was gossiped about and despised, especially by women, for her loose character. Her sin was that she easily fell into the beds of men, to anyone who asked. However, whatever gifts she received from her connections with the village men, she gladly gave to the unfortunate.
The other young woman, named Utz-Colel, was virtuous and righteous, but she visibly despised anything she disliked, having a cold heart full of pride. One day, the village was enveloped in an intoxicating fragrance, and people set out to find the source of that smell. Arriving at Xkeban's house, they found her dead, decomposing, guarded only by the animals she often fed and sheltered in her home, which were also protecting her from flies and other insects. Everyone was astonished by this, especially Utz-Colel, who said it was impossible for Xkeban's decomposing body to smell so beautiful. Unless, she added, spells were involved, or some connection with a demon.
"- If this loose woman spreads such an enchanting scent, perhaps when I die, it will smell much more beautiful," Utz-Colel added.
Eventually, the villagers buried Xkeban, and the next day her grave was covered with flowers that spread the same aroma as her body.

As fate would have it, Utz-Colel also died, pure and virginal, and people did not forget what she had said at Xkeban's death. They all gathered to attend the funeral, but they were struck by the natural smell of her rotting corpse. They did not understand why she did not smell at least as beautiful as the other, who had been a sinner. Xkeban was known to all for her virtues and honesty. Even on her grave, cacti and other thorny plants grew, with no sign of beautiful flowers.
In the next world, Utz-Colel realized that Xkeban's sins had been sins of love, and not of malice, and that is why the miracle had happened, as if she were a saint and not a sinner.
Thus, Utz-Colel decided to return to earth, helped by a demon from beyond, and to imitate Xkeban's deeds. But she did not realize that Xkeban's actions came from a pure heart, and that this had forgiven Xkeban's sins. Thus, Utz-Colel became Xtabay. She usually waits for her victims in the shade of trees, where she combs her long hair and seduces them. Once fallen under Xtabay's charm, the men die following the infernal sexual act with her.
